It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

Not always. Truth be told, this is one of the most stressful, depressing, and barren times of the year for many.

If you’re Canadian, you know our winters are long and cold and sometimes lonely. I (Chelsea) have never really enjoyed the Christmas season. Jason has never understood why, and I actually can’t really put my finger on it either. What I do know is that I have often felt like I should be everything to everyone this time of year. And that I never measure up.

I feel like I haven’t baked enough. Haven’t done enough seasonal crafts with the kids. Haven’t put up enough decorations … I seriously didn’t even put up a tree until 2012, when Jason came along. Haven’t cooked enough. I haven’t bought enough presents for enough people. Haven’t donated enough. Haven’t drunk enough eggnog … I need to get going on that. Of course, I want to enjoy this season. Of course, I want to have special memories with my family. But for some reason, each year, I just feel sad. And empty. And not enough. If you’ve made it this far, it’s likely because you too aren't filled with Christmas joy and fruitcake. And for you, I want you to know it’s OK. And that you are enough. And as grinchy as you may feel, remember even his heart grows eventually.

Maybe Christmas (he thought) doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” — The Grinch

So what can you do to make this a more wonderful time of the year?

Create traditions for your family! Here are some suggestions:

  1. Have each person choose their favourite Christmas or Holiday movie, make a list and commit to watching them all.

  2. Dedicate an evening to driving around looking at Christmas lights in a festive neighbourhood. Don't forget to stock up on hot coffee or hot chocolate -- and don't skimp on the whip cream!

  3. Choose a delicious meal/theme for Christmas eve dinner. Our family always has appetizers or charcuterie. YUM.

  4. Draw names for each member of the family to purchase a special gift. When you have a lot of generous children who want to buy for everyone it doesn't always fit in the budget.

  5. Remember that the reason for the season is to love one another. Spend time with family and friends. And not all the commercial garbage you think it is.
